About Dick Sonne's: After
returning home from his service during the second World War, Dick Sonne
was not interested in pursuing his family business, Sonne Brothers
Jewelers. While Dick worked with his family for awhile, he
eventually positioned himself to invest in a business where he could be
around his true passion and work to get others involved in it. Dick opened a bike shop.
In 1962, Dick Sonne’s Bike & Hike opened in Utica, NY. Dick sold
bicycles with enthusiasm, pointing to the value of a bicycle as a tool for
health, fitness and transportation, not a toy which is what bicycles
were viewed to be by many at this time. Dick was often harassed on
road rides by drivers and people who thought bicycles were ridiculous.
These people did
not respect what cycling is all about. Dick didn’t care.
For twenty years Dick Sonne built his business on selling quality
bicycles and service to customers with one goal in mind: getting people
involved with cycling and promoting the benefits of the sport.
In 1984, Steve Sonne (Dick’s son) acquired the business from his father
and wished to continue what Dick had started. He wants to
offer the best products, selection, service and honest customer relations
to Central New Yorkers. We feel these are the tools to creating
interest in cycling so that people want to be educated, involved and
eventually hooked on all the positive aspects cycling has to offer.
To this day our goals have not changed. Keeping our customers
happy and on their bikes is what we have always aimed for. We
never plan to change that goal…
At 81 years of age, Dick still rides his bike
almost daily. In 2003 he was inducted into the International
Cycling Hall of Fame for his dedication to cycling and his advocating of
it.
Over the years Dick Sonne’s has sponsored many riders and teams
competing in BMX, Mountain & Road Racing. Currently the shop
yields one of the strongest BMX and Road Racing teams in the Northeast.
It is our way of giving back to the sport we love and a way of not only
promoting our shop, but more importantly, promoting cycling. Our
teams’ priorities are these: 1) Have fun 2) Promote cycling in an
enthusiastic manner 3) Set a positive example, exhibiting good
sportsmanship 4) Win some races...which we do pretty well for being
our fourth goal :).
Thank you for your interest,
Dick Sonne’s Cycles, Fitness & Skis
“Dick Sonne’s Cycles, Fitness and Skis has been Central New York’s #1
source for bicycles and bicycling equipment for over 44 years. We carry
more brands of bicycles than any other retailer in the Northeastern United
States. We aim to offer our customers the best of the best in products,
selection and service.”
